Bleeding gums are a common oral health problem. At times, your gums can bleed without any serious reason and the issue goes away on its own. However, in some cases, the bleeding is an indicator of an underlying dental issue. Unless that dental problem is resolved, treating the bleeding only will not be helpful.

Reasons for Bleeding Gums

The main reason could be one of the following:

  • Gum tissue becomes fragile due to inflammation of gum tissues
  • Damaged teeth and gum disease cause extreme bleeding from the gums
  • In a severe bacterial infection, bacteria invade into a pocket underneath the gum line and cause bleeding
  • Injury or trauma results in damage to the gingival attachment and causes severe bleeding from the gums
  • Gum recession
  • Plaque and tartar build-up
  • People with dry mouth are more likely to experience gum bleeding due to the lack of saliva that helps maintain the natural balance of acid salts in the mouth
  • Use of blood thinners
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Improper method of brushing and flossing
  • Hormonal changes due to pregnancy

Gums Bleed When Brushing Teeth

Many people experience bleeding gums when they brush or floss. This can happen if you brush and floss in an aggressive or wrong manner. Meanwhile, some people can have their gums bleed when brushing teeth because of sensitivity or gum disease.

The right way to brush is to hold it at a 45 degrees angle and use small back and forth motions. If the back and forth motions feel too abrasive, you can also use a circular motion. It is important to cover as many surfaces as possible. You should brush both the front and back of the teeth, along with the chewing surfaces. For brushing the back of the front upper and lower teeth, you should hold the brush vertically and gently move it up and down.

To floss, you should use the thread in a C position between the teeth. The C-position should be applied against the side of each tooth to gently remove leftover debris. Nowadays, you can also find other flossing tools in the market, which make it easier.

If your gums are sensitive or you have some form of gum disease, dentists recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can also use an electric toothbrush, which is also helpful in reaching more areas of the mouth. You can also consult your dentist about toothpaste and mouthwashes that may be more appropriate to use in case of bleeding gums.

If the bleeding is excessive and persistent, then visit your dentist so the problem could be diagnosed properly.
