What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a head and facial massage technique targeted to the sensitive bones that make up the cranium. This is a gentle, low-force technique that uses only five grams of pressure – about the weight of a nickel. Despite its subdued nature, this technique is precise, and its effects on the body are great.

Dr. Purps will evaluate the tension held in the cranium through touching pressure points along the head. A session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes.

Craniosacral therapy (or CST) manipulates a part of our body entwined deeply with the central nervous system. Thus, its effects can be felt throughout the body. CST can aid in the treatment of:

  • Orthodontic Pain / Post-Treatment Regression
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Sinus Issues

This treatment has also been shown to improve mood, sleep quality, and stress levels. Because of the close proximity between the cranium and the teeth, dental patients benefit immensely from CST.

Invisalign® Clear Braces and CST

Implementing regular CST will improve your Invisalign experience, both during and after your orthodontic treatment.

The cranial bones and muscles are retrained as the aligners shift the teeth into place. This can cause mild discomfort. Regular CST will relax these muscles and ease them into the new jaw alignment. After treatment, some patients experience orthodontic regression, in which their teeth shift into their original misaligned state. This is caused by unmitigated tension in the cranium. Fortunately, with regular CST, these muscles will relax and accept their new placement.

CST for Whole-Body Wellness

When the cranial bones are out of order, their corresponding muscles will tense up while trying to achieve balance. Often, this state is brought on by stress or trauma. This can cause headaches and inflammation, as well as negatively affect sleep quality.

The bones and muscles in the heads are very responsive, and faults in these systems can contribute to a host of dysfunctions in the body. Tension in the temporal bones, for example, will cause jaw clenching. Persistent clenching leads to joint stress, fatigue, and discomfort. When progressed, this condition is known as a temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD. People who complain of difficulty chewing or limited jaw opening capacity would likely benefit from CST therapy targeted to the tense temporal bones.

Although different cranial bones affect specific systems, like the jaw joints and the sinuses, for example, their relaxed and proper layout contributes to systemic wellness.
