Digital Dentistry in San Diego, CA
There is no doubt that dentistry has come a long way in the last half-century. It wasn’t until the 1950s that many of the tools and techniques we take for granted today were first invented and introduced to the world; Fluoride toothpaste, high-speed dental handpieces, and even the fully reclining dental chair!
The world keeps changing, and dentistry must keep changing with it. New techniques and technologies are constantly being unveiled and improved upon.
Fine Dentistry in San Diego recognizes the value of continuing education. We strive to better ourselves and our industry with cutting-edge practices and ideas. Our aim is to give our patients comfortable yet thorough dentistry that leads them to a lifetime of happy, healthy smiles.
Digital Imaging with 3D X-Ray Technology
Most people know what x-rays usually look like. A black film with flat images of the bone held up to bright lights.
At Fine Dentistry, we use state-of-the-art technology such as the Planmeca 3D X-Ray machine to take a full digital scan of your jaw and entire dental structure. This creates a highly detailed 3D rendering that can be viewed from any angle.
Not only does this give Dr. Purps a clearer picture of your dentition, but it also allows for the milling of crowns and restorations that perfectly replicate the shape of your natural teeth.
The Benefits of Digital Radiography
- Less Radiation – One of the main drawing points to a digital x-ray machine is that patients and operators are exposed to up to 90 percent less radiation than standard radiography. While modern film-based x-ray systems are perfectly safe, digital radiography brings those levels down as low as reasonably achievable.
- Cost – The average film-based x-ray costs about 50 cents to produce. This may seem inexpensive for the consumer, but that only factors in material costs. A film is much more labor-intensive to develop, the labor costs can raise that price significantly. Digital radiography requires virtually no materials and hardly any labor.
- Time – Traditionally, radiographs must be developed on film, which takes time. With a digital system, your x-rays are ready to view as soon as they’re taken.
- Storage – With an all-digital radiography system, there is no need to maintain space for the storage of old x-rays and extra film. We simply save the digital file to a patient’s individual folder for later reference.
